On the evening of February 9, 2009, the Lantern Festival, a fire broke out in the north annex of the new CCTV building due to fireworks being set off nearby. The fire raged for six hours. The area of buildings affected by fire and smoke was 21,333 square meters, causing direct economic losses of 163.83 million yuan. The picture shows that on August 12, 2010, a tower crane had been erected beside the north annex building (left) of the new CCTV headquarters to prepare for the demolition work.

The new building of CCTV won the World's best high-rise Building Award. The World Council on Tall Buildings' "2013 Tall Building Awards" were announced in Chicago, the United States on the evening of the 7th. The new building of China Central Television has won the top award - the World's Best High-rise Building Award. The construction period of the CCTV Building lasted for eight years and it is the largest single steel structure building in China. The design is by the Dutch firm Metropolitan Architects.
